In the sword set we find the move 海底撈月 – Hook Moon up from Sea Bottom. In this beautiful wood-block lithograph by the Japanese artist Okara Koson (“Monkey and Reflection of the Moon”) the monkey is not fishing, but reaching for the moon’s reflection. The image makes it plain that the name of the move is not meant to be taken literally. Instead, it’s a metaphor for a beautiful but impossible dream. This metaphor is still used in China today.
